THE MID-TERM IS A
CLOSED-BOOK, CLOSED-NOTES EXAM AND WILL COVER CHAPTERS 1-7.
Please be prepared to answer questions from any of these chapters.
There will be 60 Multiple-Choice and 2 essay questions. You will
have 2 hours to complete the exam. You should bring your driver’s
license or passport, Coastline ID, a #2 pencil and a pen to the
test site. All other testing materials will be provided. You may
also bring a calculator to the exam.
The midterm examination is
worth 200 points or 25% of your final grade.
SCHEDULING ALTERNATE EXAMS
Students who cannot make it to the official test date can schedule
alternate exams through the distance learning website at http://dl.coastline.edu/.
After you have accessed the site, click “Schedule Alternate Exams”
on the right side of the screen to schedule your exam for a
different date. Please do so as early as possible in the semester
since the alternative testing dates tend to fill up quickly.
ESSAY QUESTIONS (2)
(40 POINTS EACH/80 POINTS TOTAL)
Essays must include GRAPHS and
EXAMPLES and should be AT LEAST THREE PARAGRAPHS LONG. Please be
sure to correctly label your graphs and EXPLAIN all graphs
thoroughly (a graph without explanation will lose points). You
should write as much as possible for the essays. Inadequate or
incomplete answers (for example, one-sentence answers) will not
receive any points!! Students should be prepared to write essays
on the following topics. Only 2 of the following questions will be
on the exam (and one of them will definitely be supply and demand
– hint! hint!).
-
Define unemployment and
discuss the 4 different types of unemployment (with examples).
-
Define and discuss the
concept of GDP and how it is calculated.
-
Discuss the 4 different
causes of market failure with examples.
-
Supply/Demand Analysis – You
will be given different scenarios and must explain what is
happening to the supply/demand curves.
MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONS
(60) (TWO POINTS EACH/120 POINTS TOTAL)
Can include anything we have
covered in Chapters 1-7.
HOW TO STUDY FOR THE MIDTERM
-
ONLINE QUIZZES
(www.mhhe.com/economics/discoverecon/schiller10)
Online quizzes have proven to be extremely helpful in studying
for the multiple-choice part of the exam. The online quizzes
will familiarize you with the general structure and type of
questions that will be on the exam. Past students have told me
that the online quizzes were very useful in helping them prepare
for exams.
-
STUDY GROUPS
If there is something that is not totally clear, it is always a
good idea to work with another person to try and understand a
concept. You may want to post a message on the discussion board
in order to find study group members in your area.
-
REVIEW THE EXERCISES AND
QUIZZES!!
You never know, some of those questions may show up on the exam.
-
STUDY EVERY DAY FOR THE
EXAM!!
Do not wait until the last minute to cram for the exam. If you
do, chances are you will fail the exam. The more you review the
chapters, the more you will understand and remember the
information that you have learned. You should also review the
homework and exercises we have done in the class.
-
WRITE OUTLINES AND COMPLETE
ANSWERS FOR THE ESSAY QUESTIONS!!
This will help you remember the information you have learned. It
will also be easier for you to organize your essay when you take
the exam.
-
SEE ME IF YOU NEED HELP!!
If you are completely confused and have no idea what is going
on, chances are you may fail the exam. Please make an
appointment to come see me for tutoring or e-mail me with any
questions you have. I am here to help you.
