It is highly recommended that you take advantage of the tools available on the textbook website. Previous students have told me that they find the online quizzes especially helpful for preparing for the mid-term and final exams.

Course Description
Course analyzes recession, unemployment and inflation; focuses on business cycles, output and income measurements, the equilibrium level of national income, money creation, the banking system and public debt. Also examines monetary and fiscal policy. Graded or credit option.

Grading Policy
Class grade will consist of a class project, midterm, final exam and quizzes. Course grade will be determined using a straight percentage scale as follows:

A= 90-100%
B= 80-89%
C=70-79%
D=60-69%
F= 0-59%

Credit/No Credit students must earn a minimum of 70% (560 points) for CREDIT.
 

COMPONENTS OF CLASS GRADE

Class Project 200 points
Midterm 200 points
Quizzes 200 points
Final Exam 200 points
Total points possible = 800

 
 

GRADING SCALE

A = 720-800  POINTS (90-100%)
B = 640-719  POINTS (80-89%)
C = 560-639  POINTS (70-79%)
D = 480-559  POINTS (60-69%)
F =     0-479  POINTS (0-59%)

Quizzes
There will be four quizzes in this course. Each quiz will cover three to four chapters. Quizzes will be due prior to the deadline posted on the Assignment Schedule. Quizzes will be closed two days after the posted deadline. Once a quiz has been closed, it will not be re-opened for anyone for any reason. It is the students' responsibility to complete the quizzes before the deadline. Quizzes will generally consist of 50 multiple-choice questions.

Homework
There will be no formal weekly homework assignments for this class. Instead, it is recommended that students complete the questions at the end of the chapter(s) in the text as well as problems in the Student Problem Set that accompanies the text. I will also include a series of recommended extra credit exercises/worksheets that will help you digest the concepts you have learned in the textbook and prepare you for exams.

Exams
All exams are mandatory and failure to complete all exams will result in an “F” in the course. The midterm will consist of 60 multiple-choice and 2 essay questions. The final exam will have 60 multiple-choice and 2 essay questions. You must bring your Coastline ID and a driver’s license or passport to the Midterm and Final Examination site. Please see the Midterm & Final Exam Study Guides for more details.

Extra Credit
There will be at least one exercise/worksheet for each module.

Extra Credit Possible from Worksheets = 40pts.
To get extra credit points worksheets must be faxed or mailed to the Distance Learning Office the week after the week/module is scheduled for completion.

Grades
Please do not contact the instructor or the Testing Office for your final scores/grades. Grades may be obtained approximately three weeks after the conclusion of the semester by calling (714) 438-8249. If you would like to have your grade mailed to you by the instructor, you may submit a self-addressed, stamped grade request postcard at the final exam (or mail it to me). The instructor will NOT e-mail grades to students at the end of the course.

Due to the nature of the course, the professor will not assign any "incompletes". If you cannot complete all of the work, please drop the class before the drop deadline.

Project
Throughout the course of the semester, you will be required to find and analyze ten (10) newspaper articles which address the issues we are covering (e.g., supply and demand, economic shocks, externalities (social cost), fiscal policy levers, aggregate supply and demand, unemployment, inflation, etc.). The project is due to the instructor at the final exam review session. Please see project instructions for more details about the class project.  NO LATE PROJECTS WILL BE ACCEPTED!!
