"Choosing Words Correctly"

Course Overview: This course provides an introduction to choosing words correctly. Understanding the parts of speech will help you form better sentences and will improve your ability to communicate effectively.

When you complete Choosing Words Correctly, you should be able to:

  • Identify and use different types of words correctly, including synonyms, antonyms, homophones and homonyms, and negative words.
  • Identify and avoid common word choice errors and confusing words.
  • Identify and avoid confusing verbs.
  • Identify and avoid using inappropriate language, inappropriate figures of speech, and slang and jargon.
  • Identify and use figurative language correctly.
  • Avoid wordiness.
  • Identify and use voice effectively.
  • Identify the elements of a consistent writing style.

Required Text: There is no text book for this course. All course materials are online. A short Study Guide has been developed, but it is not currently available.

Mastery Tests: These are designed to test your skills. You must score 80% or above to move on in the lessons.

Grading: English 022.4 is a Credit/No Credit course; in other words, a letter grade is not possible. Your grade, CR or NC, will be based on your successful completion of the tutorial and practice sections as well as the Lesson Mastery Tests and the Course Mastery Test with an 80% or above.
