Optional: How 10 by Clark & Clark. (No assignments are given from this book. It is just a fabulous office reference manual that supplements the reference manual in your textbook.)

Week 1
08/27 - 09/02

Write a short introductory paragraph and send to Professor Taylor this week. Post this paragraph to the Discussion Forum located on the course website.

Place a copy in your notebook.

COURSE INTRODUCTION  - Get organized and familiar with the site and the textbook.

  1. Go to the course website and read the Instructor Welcome and look at all links. Print all information and place in your notebook. (More about notebook later.)
  2. At the home page of the English 105 site click on Student – Student Discussion Forum. Take a moment to learn how to write and access a message. Then send a short paragraph introducing yourself to Professor Taylor. Do this no later than the end of this week, and Professor Taylor will write back to you. You may also respond to other students’ messages.
  3. Read the inside left cover of text to learn what the textbook icons mean.
  4. Read and study Contents, pages v-x.
  5. Locate text’s Appendixes A-E, pages 333-415.
  6. Locate and study Index, pages 417-426.
  7. Tab textbook as discussed in course introduction.
  8. Read Dear Student, page xi-xiii.
  9. Complete and grade Replay (i), page xiv.
  10. Go to Pretest link and take the Pretest, or take the Pretest on page xv.
  11. Grade the Pretest with the answers shown on this link. Based upon the number of questions you answer correctly, see if you are in just the right class!
  12. Go to the Pretest link for an explanation of each answer.

 

Each week please use the following plan for studying English 105-Business English. 

  1. Read the chapter introduction at the beginning of each chapter.
  2. Take the chapter pretest located on the website and grade. Place the completed and graded pretest in your notebook.
  3. View the PowerPoint presentation for the assigned chapter.
  4. Read the assigned chapter. 
  5. You will be reading and working your way through each assigned chapter. Therefore, read the Reads, complete the Recaps and Replays as you come to them, and grade your Recaps and Replays with answers shown in Appendix E, page 385. Mark your answers using blue or black pen. Write neatly. Write in your book.
  6. Read the short lecture located on the web site.
  7. Complete and grade the Read and Replays in the text. Correct your errors using red pen.
  8. Study the Checkpoint in the text.
  9. Proofreading for Careers: Print the proofreading exercises for all chapters. These are located on the website. Use red pen or pencil and proofreading marks shown on back cover of text to mark errors. Grade your proofreading by comparing your copy with Proofreading Answer Key on course website. Place corrected proofreading exercises for each chapter in your notebook. Type final proofreading document, print, proofread again, and place in your notebook.
  10. Take the Practice Quiz in your text and grade using the Practice Quiz Key on the course website.
  11. Take Real Quizzes A and B on-line. You will be asked to set up your password first. Keep this information in your notebook or close to your computer. CHAPTER 11 - The Pauses That Refresh, Use Commas, Exclamation Marks, Periods, Question Marks
Complete the Special Assignment, pages 249-250. Follow these steps:

First insert commas and end-of-sentence punctuation in the 35 sentences; think of the rule before inserting the comma. Some apostrophes are also needed. Write C beside four-five sentences that don't require commas or apostrophes. 

The second step is to TYPE each sentence with commas and apostrophes shown, or TYPE "C" in front of correct sentences. 

The third step is to e-mail this typed document to me by the end of this week. Use Your Name, Special Assignment 11, and date in the e-mail subject line. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS ARE ACCEPTED.

Monday begin reviewing for Final Exam. The final exam has 100 questions, two proofreading documents, and 25 bonus questions. Each bonus question you answer correctly adds ½ point to your test score.

YOU MAY NOT TAKE THE TEST UNLESS YOU BRING YOUR DICTIONARY, NOTEBOOK, RED PEN, AND TEXTBOOK.

The final exam covers Chapters 1-12 and 14. You may use your dictionary. No late final exams will be given. Please make arrangements with me if you need to take the exam early. THIS MEANS NO MAKE-UP EXAM IS GIVEN AFTER THE FINAL EXAM DATE.
