GRADING FOR ON-LINE ENGLISH 105
Your grade in English 105—Business English—will be calculated based on these criteria:

PARTICIPATION

Weekly class participation is a requirement. Professor Taylor determines participation by weekly Real Quizzes taken by each student. She gives students two weeks to take Chapter 1 Real Quiz A and B.

*Real Quizzes

Total Possible Points: 325

13 Real Quizzes-You may always take both A & B Quizzes.

I calculate the higher score.

This is the grading scale for Real Quizzes:

A=23-25 points
B=20-22 points
C=15-19 points
D=12-14 points

*Midterm exam

Total Possible Points: 50

Bonus Possible: 7.5

50 objective test questions, and 15 bonus questions.

Each bonus question answered correctly adds ½ point to your midterm exam test score. No deduction for bonus questions answered incorrectly.

A=45-50 points and above
B=40-44 points
C=30-39 points
D=25-29 points

Place a tab to mark each chapter and section of your book. Bring your tabbed textbook and organized notebook to the midterm and final exams to earn up to 40 points.

Textbook: Mark each chapter with a tab. Also place a tab at Pop Quizzes, Reference Manual, and Read and Replay Answers. Study the Table of Contents and pay special attention to page numbers.

Notebook, Cover, and Dividers

  • Prepare a notebook cover that includes your name, the name of the course, my name, and an appropriate graphic. Be creative!!
  • Print Grading Sheet and Course Syllabus (Weekly Schedule).
  • Place the Grading Sheet right after the cover. This is a must.
  • Print my introduction to you.
  • MAKE THESE NOTEBOOK DIVIDERS AND FILE YOUR TESTS OR APPROPRIATE INFORMATION BEHIND THEM. BE ORGANIZED.
  • Pretests – Required    You will have a total of 13 pretests. You grade these with answers from this website. 
  • Practice Quizzes – Required     These are quizzes at the end of each chapter. You photocopy these from your book. After you have completed the Practice Quiz, you grade it with answers from this site. Place each practice quiz in your notebook.
  • Real Quizzes – Required     Total of 13. You may have up to 26 if you take A and B quizzes. Each quiz has 25 points possible. I record the higher of the two scores if you take both quizzes.
  • Proofreading for Careers Required.  26 points possible. Print Proofreading for Careers for each chapter. You will find these on this website. Using a red pen, mark the errors you find with proofreading symbols. Open the documents in Word, and revise and print the documents. Place both your marked-up copy and final copy in your notebook. 
     
  • Short Lecture Notes - Required. 25 points possible.
  • Pop Quizzes, pages 333-361 – Extra Credit. These provide a nice review. If you complete and grade all of them except Chapter 13, you earn 25 extra credit points. 
  • Special Assignments – Chapter 11 is required. Special assignments appear at the end of each chapter.
  • Earn up to 10 points each for completing other special assignments and E-mailing them to me. I deduct one point for each error you make. Use your name and special assignment number in your e-mail subject line. Type your name at the top of each special assignment.
  • Reference Manual Open Book Quiz, pages 370-384 –  Extra Credit - 30 Points. Page numbers for these reference manual Reads, Replays, and Recaps are shown in the Table of Contents. Earn 30 points for completing, correcting, and printing these. Place in your notebook.
  • Proofreading Error Samples  – Extra Credit. Earn one extra credit point for each error you find in newspapers, E-mails, letters, memos, signs, flyers, advertisements, radio announcements, etc. (Keep paper and pen handy when you are watching television or listening to the radio. You may even find errors on our website.
*Short Lecture Notes

Total Possible Points: 25

Print Short Lecture Notes for each chapter. Follow instructions to read, answer, and check your answers for each short lecture.

EXTRA CREDIT

Special Assignments 1-12 and 14

Total possible points: 120

These must be typed and placed in your notebook. Each correct special assignment is worth 10 points.
Reference Manual Quizzes.

Total possible points: 30

  • Open-Book Quizzes on Mini Reference Manual, Numbers, Capitalization, Word Division, and Abbreviations.
Pop Quizzes

Possible Points = 25

If you complete all of the pop quizzes, correct them, and place them in your notebook, you will earn an extra 25 points. You may photocopy them instead of taking them out of your textbook.
Real Life Samples of English errors or good use of English

Total Possible Points: Up to 25

+1 point for each sample placed in notebook. Maximum points = 25.
