I'm Enrolled in Geology 100 -- What Do I Do First?

The first thing you need to do is submit your Letter of Agreement and determine if you need a proctor. I create a listserv of students from the Letter of Agreement to send out course announcements, so please submit the form as soon as possible. Then look at the Introductory Lecture (Lecture, Part 1; Lecture, Part 2) which will introduce you to some of the main concepts in this course. Although some of the material in the Introductory Lecture will not be covered until you are quite far in your readings, you will find that it covers the basic topics that you need to understand as you continue your studies. Do not worry if the Introductory Lecture seems advanced for you. You will better grasp the concepts as you move further into your reading assignments

The text and the viewing lessons for this course are designed to help you get the most out of your study of physical geology. The viewing lessons illustrate and demonstrate concepts in the textbook and bring in experts from around the world to discuss geological phenomena and issues. There are Question for Reflection available for each of the viewing assignments. You will be asked to turn in three "Questions for Reflection" assignments of your choice during the semester.

Each of the text chapters is summarized. See the individual unit links in the navigation bar above. There are also self-tests you can take to check how well you understand the reading.  There are a variety of questions at the end of each text chapter in the "Testing Your Knowledge" and "Expanding Your Knowledge" sections. I have pulled out some of the most important of these questions for you to self-test your knowledge of the reading assignments. You are not graded on these self-tests, but they can help you to better understand the chapter and, as an incentive to look them over, some of these same questions will be included on the two graded quizzes that you are required to submit for the course.

You can take the self-tests online (links from the individual unit pages, see navigation bar). The feedback will be automatically available to you after you submit your answers.

In addition to the self-tests there are two graded quizzes that are submitted online. See the Quiz page link on the schedule page to view and take the quizzes. All quizzes are available online four days before the first quiz is due. If you have any problems submitting your quiz call the testing office (714) 241-6216 and they will help you gain access.

The Schedule page has the information about all your assignments and due dates and the Syllabus page has information on grading. Look these pages over carefully.

This course has a Discussion Forum where you can post comments and questions. I answer postings on the Discussion Forum first and then my e-mail. I also post course announcements there, so please check the forum frequently.

Navigating the Course Web Site

Use the navigation bar to go to any page of the course Web site. The navigation bar, found at the top of each page, looks like this:

Read the information below. It contains the name of each link on the navigation bar and explains what will happen when you click it:

  • Home takes you back to this page.

  • Syllabus takes you to the course syllabus page, which contains information about the course goals, readings, grading, and other requirements and information.

  • Schedule takes you to a summary of the course schedule, an abbreviated listing of each week's reading and viewing assignments, and tentative due dates for major assignments. Many important course links are found on the Schedule page.

  • Contact Information takes you directly to the instructor contact information

  • Helpful Info takes you to a page with information about how to contact your instructor, frequently asked questions, important phone numbers and dates, site maps and how to obtain technical support.

  • Quizzes takes you to a page with quiz instructions and information.

  • Discussion Forum takes you to the communication device for this course. Enroll yourself as a new user, log on and say hello. Any announcements from your instructor will be found on the Discussion Forum, so check it frequently. Follow the instructions and log on and leave a message.

  • Check Your Score allows you to check your scores on quizzes and assignments. It is not automatic, so their is sometimes a substantial delay between submitting an assignment and the score showing on the system.

  • The Jump to Unit bar works a little bit differently. There is a separate page for each unit of the course (Unit 1, Unit 2, etc.). Clicking on any number (1-16) takes you to the page for that unit.
