Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Describe the effects that lifestyle choices can have on health.
  2. Explain how physical, psychological, social, intellectual, spiritual, and environmental factors can influence health.
  3. Explain why the life expectancy of Americans increased dramatically during the 20th century.
  4. List the three major goals of Healthy People 2000.
  5. Identify the two major goals of Healthy People 2010.
  6. Outline the steps of the decision-making process as it relates to health.
  7. Explain why motivation and commitment are essential if a person is to change health-related behaviors.
  8. Explain the difference between conventional and alternative medicine.
  9. Identify sources of reliable health information.
  10. Describe the characteristics of psychologically healthy people.
  11. Compare Freud's and Erikson's ideas concerning personality development.
  12. List common defense mechanisms and provide examples of each.
  13. Describe Maslow's hierarchy of human needs and the characteristics of a self-actualized person.
  14. Explain how biological and environmental factors interact to influence psychological health
  15. Define psychological adjustment and growth.
  16. Define self-esteem and identify factors that influence one's self-esteem.
  17. Differentiate abnormal emotional responses from normal ones.
  18. Identify common mental health disorders and describe the major symptoms of these disorders.
  19. List the major signs of impending suicide and describe suicide prevention actions.
