After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Define stress and stressors.
  2. Differentiate between eustress and distress.
  3. Differentiate between physical and psychological stressors.
  4. Describe the three stages of the general adaptation syndrome.
  5. Describe the physical changes that occur in response to stressful situations.
  6. Explain how stress can affect the mind and body.
  7. Describe various positive and negative ways of coping with stress.
  8. Identify three stress reduction techniques.
