After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Describe the effects that psychoactive drugs can have on health.
  2. Classify psychoactive drugs according to their effects on the body and mind.
  3. Explain the differences between drug use, misuse, and abuse.
  4. Define drug addiction or dependency.
  5. Identify the Controlled Substances Act and explain the concept of drug schedules.
  6. Identify personal characteristics that are associated with drug abuse.
  7. Describe current trends concerning illicit drug use in the United States.
  8. Describe ways in which over-the-counter drugs may be abused.
  9. Describe drug treatment and drug education programs.
  10. Identify the characteristics of "resilient" youth, children who are able to resist drug abuse.
