Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Define physical activity and exercise.
  2. Identify the benefits of leading a physically active lifestyle.
  3. List the major components of health-related physical fitness.
  4. Define aerobic exercise and name at least five different types of aerobic activities.
  5. Calculate target heart rates.
  6. Differentiate between isometric and isotonic forms of exercise.
  7. Identify the negative effects of using anabolic steroids.
  8. Design a personal workout-out session that includes warm up and cool down activities.
  9. List the components of RICE treatment for exercise-related injuries.
  10. Develop a physical fitness plan that can be followed for a lifetime.
  11. Describe ways to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning in the home.
  12. Identify common environmental health hazards and their sources.
  13. Identify federal legislation intended to protect consumers from being harmed by toxic products and compounds.
  14. Describe the negative effects that air pollution, water pollution, and loud sounds have on health.
  15. Distinguish between gray-air cities and brown-air cities.
  16. Take practical steps to reduce exposure to environmental health hazards.
  17. Relate the impact of overpopulation on world health.
