Review
the following questions for your midterm examination. Of the fifteen listed
questions, I will select eight questions for the examination; you, in turn, will
select four to write on. You must answer in your own words. Each answer is worth 25
points.
How to write Essays
No notes or dictionaries are permitted since this is not an open book
examination. I will supply the paper for your answers.
- The West. Discuss (a) how the practices and beliefs of the Indians differed from the
western settlers, and (b) how the Dawes Act was to eliminate the "Indian
problem?" Use specific examples from your text (ch. 17).
- Discuss the West as a place of escape from society as well as a stage to resolve moral
conflicts. Provide specific examples.(Ch.17).
- Compare and contrast the memberships, leaderships, philosophies, and strategies of the
National Labor Union, The Knights of Labor, and the American Federation of Labor. Which
union was the most successful? Why? (Ch. 18).
- Molly Maguires. How important was the immigrant Irish ethnic leadership to the cause of
labor? And what were the short-term and long-term results of the trials of the Molly
Macguires? Annual Editions
- Compare and contrast the approaches of the following social welfare organizations: YMCA,
the Salvation Army, and the Hull House. (Ch.19).
- In America of the nineteenth century, discuss the meaning of the Victorian world view,
of the genteel tradition, and of the impact of popular culture. (Ch.
19).
- What difficulties did the American farmer face in the nineteenth century? What
organizations did they form and for what reasons. How the government respond to their
demands? (Ch. 20).
- Compare Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson as representatives of two strains of
national progressivism. Compare their personalities, their political and economic agenda.
Use the election of 1912 as an example. (Ch.21).
- Identify and discuss why there are "ambiguous" legacies of the Womens
Progressivism. Provide specific examples. Annual Editions
- Summarize Wilsons Fourteen Points. How did these reflect American war aims.
(Ch.22)
- Discuss the origin of the Eugenics movement and the scientific findings which led to
the end of Eugenics in the United States. Annual Editions.
- What was the popular attitude in the 1920s toward business? How did Henry Ford epitomize
the business spirit of the era? And why did many intellectuals of the period refuse to
share business values? (Ch.23).
- Compare and contrast the
approach of President Hoover and President Roosevelt to the challenge
of the depression. Why did each President follow his particular
agenda? (Ch.24)
- Compare
the first "Hundred Days" of the New Deal with The "Second
New Deal." What were goals and major accomplishments of each. Provide
specific examples. (Ch. 24).
- Apart from Social Security, what
other programs were set up by the Social Security Act? Also discuss the
provisions of the failed Clark Amendment to the Social Security Act.
