THIS IS AN INTERNET CLASS, BE SURE YOU FOLLOW DIRECTIONS AND DO YOUR WORK ON THE INTERNET!

Set up an appointment for a demonstration of the course by calling Professor Taylor at, 714.241.6209 - Wednesdays from 1-4 p.m.

Please follow these steps to complete the class or classes you have registered in:

Step One—Download the syllabus from the Internet. Read it carefully.

  • Click on Course Syllabus, on the main course page, for your course.
  • Print the syllabus and read it carefully.

Step Two—Purchase a NEW textbook.

  • The textbooks have a code printed under the CD. It can be used only once to get in the Internet class. A used code is useless. Textbooks are shrinkwrapped—be sure the label on the shrinkwrap has blue letters.

Step Three—Watch the PowerPoint tutorial of your course.

  • Watch the PowerPoint presentation from your CD and you will understand your course. The CD also has your software on it for use to continue practicing, if you wish, after your Internet class is completed. Do not use it during your Internet class.

Step Four—Be sure you have Java loaded on your computer.
Internet courses use Java applets.

To verify that you have the Java plug-in installed correctly:

  1. Check your Control Panel for the Java Plug-in icon:
Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel

Once the Control Panel is open, Click View (in the Menu bar at the top of the screen.), Details. The Java plug-in icon will show right after the ‘Internet Options’ icon, if you have it. If you do not see the Java Plug-in, you do not have it—continue to #2 below for the FREE installation.

Windows control panel

  1. The Java Plug-in can be downloaded FREE from www.Java.com. Click on ‘Get It Now’ and follow the on-screen instructions.

Java logo

The Java Plug-in is also found on the student CD if you have a slow internet connection and don’t want to download it (it can take 30 minutes on a slow connection, a few minutes on a high speed connection).

  • Use My Computer to view the contents of the student CD
  • You will see a “Java Plug-in” folder. Double click to open the folder.
  • Double click on the Java Plug-in file.
  • Follow the prompts to load it to your computer.
  1. If you had it or had to install it, it is a good idea to check and see if your browser is selected to use it. Double click on the Java icon (or words “Java Plug-in” on the Control Panel) to open the Java control panel. Click on the browser tab and make sure your browser is selected. Click ‘Apply’.

Java Plug-in window

  1. Close and re-open your web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer) after installing the Java Plug-in. After getting to the page that says “Please wait … Program is downloading”, wait a few moments and you will see the Java coffee cup icon appear on your system tray (the system tray is the lower right area of the screen that has the clock).
  2. Some web browsers do not follow web standards. If you are using a custom browser (examples: MSN, AOL, Yahoo web browser, etc), connect to the Internet as you normally would and then open Internet Explorer to browse the web.

If it still doesn’t work, continue to #6.
  3. Try downloading and installing the Mozilla or FireFox web browser from www.Mozilla.org.

Mozilla logo

Mozilla and FireFox are FREE. There are never any special settings to look at, and it is usually a sure bet. It does have automatic pop up-ad blocking and is a very secure web browser. It does not have all of the security vulnerabilities often found in some popular web browsers. We use it at Ellsworth Publishing Co. for all our web browsing needs.

Step Five—Enter the Student Login and Password

  • Your Login/Password is: coast (enter lower case)
    (
www.Keyboardingonline.com, click on Login, enter the Login/Password (coast) on each line and click Sign In.)

Your Individual Password is the number 1.
(After the Login and Password are entered, you see all the courses taught by your school. Click on link to your course, click Open, select your class, select your name, click Open at the bottom, enter your Individual Password, click OK. A box appears asking for your serial code—this is asked for only once and the serial code is under your CD in the back of your textbook. After entering the serial code, you are now into the course software.)

Step Six--Information About Your Course
User Info

  • The first line of your menu on the left is “User Info”. Double click on it and enter your e-mail address and phone number. These will appear on the class report for the instructor.

Setup

  • You can check the course standards set by your teacher by double clicking on “Setup” in the menu, and clicking on the various tabs.

Introduction

  • Go through the Introduction.

Lessons Menu

  • Double click to open the Lessons Menu. If you see small squares next to the lesson, those are the assigned lessons. As you complete a lesson, a check mark will appear in the boxes. Click on Lesson 1, open your textbook to lesson 1, and begin.

Progress Reports

  • Double click on Progress Report to see all recorded scores. Single click on Simple Report.

Grade Report

  • Double click on Grade Report to see your final grade. Single click on Final Grade Report.
  • IMPORTANT: If you want to raise your grade, go back to your Progress Report and practice to raise any lower scores—higher scores on the Progress Report can raise your final grade.

Last Instructions
Be sure to read the Internet syllabus carefully. Be sure to do your work online so I can see it.

Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions: mtaylor@coastline.edu .
