Course Description
This approach to the psychology of aging emphasizes the importance of psychological development as a life-long process. In the context of life-span developmental psychology, the later years of life are understood to be continuous with and inextricably linked to the events and processes of earlier life.
What To Do First
These are the things you should do immediately after enrolling:

How this Course Will Flow
This course is divided into several units of study. Each week, go to the Schedule / Assignments page to find out what unit or units are assigned for that week; links to the appropriate individual unit pages will be provided for each week of the course.
Most units contain a textbook reading assignment and chapter notes. Read over the chapter learning objectives and then read the chapter assignment. After completing your reading, review the Chapter Notes to anchor the main concepts and definitions in your mind. Chapter Notes are available as text outlines in Word which can be printed for review whenever you study away from your computer. Always check the individual unit page for details about the unit's requirements.
You will be assigned a Cohort Panel Presentation, write a paper on an Interview of an Older Adult and have some other assignments as discussed in the course schedule and individual unit pages.
The Chapter Notes are review notes to help you formulate questions and to develop class discussion. They do not replace reading the chapter, which is needed for full understanding of the main ideas. Your discussion assignments will compare and contrast professional concepts and theories with life experience.
You will have an open book online final exam in this course.
Gerontology Certificate Program and Continuing Education Units
This course counts towards a Certificate of Achievement in Gerontology. Gerontology is a growing field and promises to be one of the hottest career areas in the United States and beyond. There are many career options: Working directly or on behalf of seniors, developing policy, concentrating on health, human services, legal issues, transportation, universal design and more. Several of the gerontology core courses also count towards your general education requirements, so you can gain units towards your G.E. requirements and your certificate at the same time. This course has been approved for Continuing Education Units by a variety of agencies: the Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) , for R.N.'s, CNA's, LVN's and HHA's., Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) for assisted living administrators and by the Board of Nursing Home Administrators (BNHA) for nursing home administrators. - Home takes you back to this page.
- Syllabus takes you to the course syllabus page, which contains information about the course goals, readings, grading, and other requirements and information.
- Schedule takes you to a summary of the course schedule, an abbreviated listing of each week's reading and viewing assignments, and tentative due dates for major assignments.
- Helpful Info takes you to a page with information about how to contact your instructor, frequently asked questions, important phone numbers and dates, site maps and how to obtain technical support.
- WebBoard takes you to the communication device for this course. Enroll yourself as a new user, log on and say hello. Any announcements from your instructor will be found on the WebBoard, so check it frequently.
