Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Recognize the prevalent attitudes and beliefs about sex and love in old age that frequently affect an older persons sexuality.
  2. Define the age-related physiological changes that may alter the nature of older mens and womens sexual response and performance.
  3. Know that the above changes do not necessarily interfere with their overall experience of sexuality.
  4. Recognize gay and lesbian relationships.
  5. Examine the importance of late-life affection, love and intimacy.
  6. Understand the implications for families and professionals who work with older people.
