Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Analyze the different types of family relationships- gay and lesbian, multigenerational, grandparents and grandchildren.
  2. Describe how informal supports influence and older persons well being.
  3. Describe policy and practice issues, including those of informal social networks to deliver services.
  4. Relate the economic benefits and costs of care giving to society.
  5. Define the roles of families and women as caregivers.
  6. Explain the emotional stresses associated with care giving and the interventions to support caregivers.
  7. Describe the legal and policy issues affecting informal care.
  8. Examine issues like elder abuse and institutionalization following informal care.

Short Essay - Opportunities and Stresses of Caregiving

Being a caregiver for a disabled/ill spouse or loved one can cause considerable stress. But is also allows for opportunities to deepen relationships and experience new things. What techniques and support can help a caregiver relieve stress and provide better care? Do support groups help caregivers increase their coping skills? Can you make suggestions to help caregivers cope better? Address these issues referencing textbook readings, accessing the Coastline Virtual Library, using other on-line resources, or newspaper and journal articles. Please use at least three different sources, in addition to your textbook, and be thorough in your responses.   This Short Essay Assignment should be posted by the end of next week. Remember to save it to your computer before copying it to the WebBoard.

Part 1 of the Short Essay Assignment is graded as follows:

Criteria Points
Assignment posted on time. Proper grammer and spelling. Good suggestions, properly backed with sources, adding own thoughts, opinions and ideas 35-40 points
Good suggestions, somewhat backed by sources, with no original thoughts added and-or mark down for some inaccurate grammer and spelling, or assignment posted late. 30-34 points
Suggestions are not clear, resources are not valid, or no original ideas added and-or mark down for poor grammer and spelling or assignment posted late. 25-29 points
