Learning Objectives

After reading the chapters, the student will know:

  1. The pros and cons of breast milk verse formula; when to feed infants solid foods.
  2. The problems associated with early childhood obesity and the strategies for prevention and treatment; the impact of school meal programs.
  3. Nutritional changes from childhood to adolescence; girls are more likely to develop an iron deficiency than a boy.
  4. Nutrient intakes of smokers differ from those of non-smokers.
  5. The physiological changes that occur in the body as we age and the role nutrition can play.
  6. The vitamins and minerals that need special consideration for the elderly.
  7. The relationship between cataracts, arthritis and nutrition in the elderly.
  8. The interaction between drugs and nutrients; signs of malnutrition.
