Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Describe the effects of violence on health and society.
  2. Classify various forms of violence.
  3. Identify factors that influence one's risk of violence.
  4. Identify actions that one can take to reduce his or her risk of violence.
  5. Explain why cases of violence are often unreported to the police.
  6. Define sexual harassment and steps one can take to report such abuse.
  7. Define sexuality.
  8. Recognize that sexuality is an important aspect of human existence.
  9. Describe factors that influence a person's desire to form intimate relationships.
  10. List the characteristics of loving relationships.
  11. Identify factors that contribute to compatibility.
  12. Define homosexuality, heterosexuality, and bisexuality.
  13. Explain how culture and society influence sexual behavior.
  14. Differentiate between passionate and companionate love.
  15. Describe factors that are associated with long-term loving relationships.
  16. Discuss the biological origins and social ramifications of gender roles.
  17. Describe the impact of aging on sexuality.
