Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Describe the effects that alcohol can have on health.
  2. State the amount of pure alcohol in a standard drink.
  3. Identify factors that influence the consumption of alcohol.
  4. Distinguish between responsible alcohol use, harmful use, alcohol abuse, and alcohol dependence.
  5. Describe current trends concerning alcohol consumption in the United States.
  6. Describe programs for the prevention and treatment of alcohol abuse.
  7. Identify signs of alcohol abuse.
  8. List the signs of fetal alcohol syndrome and explain how to prevent this condition.
  9. List products that contain tobacco and discuss how they are used.
  10. Identify the immediate and long-term health effects of using various products that contain tobacco.
  11. Identify cigarette smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in the United States.
  12. Identify the addictive substance in tobacco products.
  13. Describe the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.
  14. Describe strategies for quitting the use of cigarettes and other tobacco products.
  15. Discuss the negative effects of smoking during pregnancy.
  16. Identify the health hazards that adults, infants, and children face if they are exposed to environmental tobacco smoke.

    5. Identify the Controlled Substances Act and explain the concept of drug schedules.
    6. Identify personal characteristics that are associated with drug abuse.
    7. Describe current trends concerning illicit drug use in the United States.
    8. Describe ways in which over-the-counter drugs may be abused.
    9. Describe drug treatment and drug education programs.
    10. Identify the characteristics of "resilient" youth, children who are able to resist drug abuse.
