After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

- Classify psychoactive drugs according to their effects on
the body and mind.
- Explain the differences between drug use, misuse, and
abuse.
- Define drug addiction or dependency.
- Identify the Controlled Substances Act and explain the
concept of drug schedules.
- Identify personal characteristics that are associated with
drug abuse.
- Describe current trends concerning illicit drug use in the
United States.
- Describe ways in which over-the-counter drugs may be
abused.
- Describe drug treatment and drug education programs.
- Identify the characteristics of "resilient"
youth, children who are able to resist drug abuse.

There are five Viewing Lessons which offer Questions for Reflection. The lessons with Questions for Reflection are marked with a Q4R. You can choose three of the lessons to submit. These can be submitted any time during the semester, but must be completed by Week 13 of the 16 Week class or Week 5 of the 8 week class. Instructions are listed on the Questions for Reflection page.
