Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Describe ways to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning in the home.
  2. Identify common environmental health hazards and their sources.
  3. Identify federal legislation intended to protect consumers from being harmed by toxic products and compounds.
  4. Describe the negative effects that air pollution, water pollution, and loud sounds have on health.
  5. Distinguish between gray-air cities and brown-air cities.
  6. Take practical steps to reduce exposure to environmental health hazards.
  7. Relate the impact of overpopulation on world health.
  8. Describe the functioning of the cardiovascular system.
  9. Define atherosclerosis and explain how atherosclerosis results in cardiovascular disease.
  10. List major risk factors for cardiovascular disease; identify the risk factors that are controllable.
  11. Recall recommended cholesterol and blood pressure levels.
  12. Differentiate between HDL and LDL; explain the significance of having high HDL or LDL levels, and describe actions that can reduce LDL levels and raise HDL levels.
  13. Describe the signs and symptoms of angina, heart attack, and stroke.
  14. Discuss actions that can reduce one's risk of cardiovascular disease.
  15. Describe modern methods of treating cardiovascular disease.
