Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Define aging, senescence, life span, and life expectancy.
  2. Describe the impact that "Baby Boomers" are having on American society as they age.
  3. Define ageism and describe its effects.
  4. List physical changes that are associated with the normal aging process.
  5. Identify four health conditions that are associated with unhealthy aging.
  6. Identify psychosocial changes that are associated with aging.
  7. Discuss theories that explain why people age.
  8. Explain what is meant by "successful aging" and a "good death."
  9. Describe actions that reduce the likelihood of dying prematurely.
  10. List four signs of death.
  11. Discuss the five stages that Kübler-Ross developed to describe the emotional responses of dying persons.
  12. Define euthanasia and differentiate between active and passive forms of euthanasia.
  13. Explain the value of having an advance directive.
  14. Differentiate between normal and abnormal grieving.
