Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Describe health, quality of life, ADLs and IADLs.
  2. Know the social and psychological factors that affect perceptions of health and the use of health services.
  3. Know the distinctions among chronic diseases that occur most frequently in older adults.
  4. Understand the use of health services and health behaviors of older people.
  5. Explain health promotion and its benefits in old age.
  6. Understand the economic conditions faced by older women.
  7. Explain the health and social status of women and how these factors interact.
  8. Describe the program and policy options to reduce older womens vulnerability to poverty, poor health, and social isolation.
