Learning Objectives

After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the P-E theories that describe adaptation to aging.
  2. Understand the impact of the natural and built environment on the older persons social functioning.
  3. Understand the influence of a population that is growing older on community, planning and housing.
  4. Recognize new options in long-term care for frail elders and services to help elders remain independent in the community.
  5. Describe new technology for community-dwelling elders.
  6. Explain the housing policy affecting older adults, including SRO housing and the homeless.
