After reading this chapter, students should be able to:

  1. Understand the definitions, status and expenditures for acute and long-term care.
  2. Explain Medicare, its rising costs, and current efforts to reduce costs.
  3. Identify ways of improving the quality of care and discuss the growing need for long-term care.
  4. Discuss private long-term care insurance, its costs and limitations.
  5. Discuss Medicaid and the growth of community based services.
  6. Understand the new cost-attainment initiatives under Medicaid and Medicare.
