How to Download Files

STEPS |

|
|
1. |
As you
search the Internet, you will come across many new applications
and files you will want to download and use. |
Our courses uses a
combination of Internet Web support and streaming video materials
for an effectively designed educational experience.
|
|
|
|
2. |
Type in the
URL for RealPlayer (as shown here)
http://www.real.com/ and we'll
visit that site.
The following instructions will guide
you through the process of downloading the latest version of
RealPlayer. |

3. |
You may
need to scroll down the page to locate RealPlayer 10 Basic
version.
Click on the download link (usually a
link that says "Download" or the name of the file).
This will take you to the next screen to locate the Free
RealPlayer version.
After you selected the Free Download,
again you may have to scroll down to the bottom of web page to
locate the Free Version of this player.
Click on the hyperlink RealPlayer
10 Basic and follow the instructions for completing the
required form. |

Fill in the
required boxes to complete the form prior to proceeding with the
download.
Arrows to the right of each box
indicate that there are more options you can select from.
After you completed filling in each
box, you'll need to scroll down the page to see the next step. |

5. |
Select the
Download FREE RealPlayer 10 Basic bar to begin downloading.
Select the site or location nearest
you, if given a choice.
These are the locations you'll be
downloading from. |

6. |
RealPlayer Basic download option window will appear displaying a
features included in each package, and the recommended
selection at this time.
Click on the Download FREE
RealPlayer Basic Now button and proceed to next step. |
|
|
7. |
A window
will pop up asking whether you wish to Run this program from its
current location, or save it to disk.
The appearance of
the window will differ, depending on your operating system.
Click the option to Save to disk and
then click OK to proceed. |
|
|
8. |
Select "Save"
to retain the file for future use.
TIP: Create a Download
folder ahead of time, and use this location for downloading files
from the Internet. |
|
|
9. |
With the Downloads folder selected,
you can type in a different name (one that's easier to remember)
that you will access later to install RealPlayer. |

|
10. |
The
Progress Bar will be display throughout the entire
download operation.
Estimated time left and Download will
be displayed during the download operation.
Download Complete will be
indicated as shown here.
Click on the Close button and
you're ready to begin using RealPlayer 10. |

TIPS |
|
|
|
- You can still browse the Web while
your file is downloading. Just click on the original browser
window.
|
- Many browsers offer the option of
downloading multiple files simultaneously.
However, downloading multiple files at once takes just as long
as downloading them one at a time.

How to Decompress a File
With WinZip
Extracting the File
| STEPS |

| 1. |
Select the archived file
and double-click on it. If WinZip is configured correctly, the
WinZip program will launch and open your archive.
|
|
| 2. |
The WinZip window will
display a list of all the files in the archive. Select the one you
want to decompress.
|
|
| 3. |
Click on the Extract
icon, or use the Extract item in the Actions menu.
|
|
| 4. |
A window will appear
asking you where you want to save your extracted file. Find a
location to save the file.
|
|
| 5. |
Name your file, or use
the existing name.
|
|
| 6. |
Click Extract. |
|
|
|
|
| Tips: |
|
|
|
- You can use the same process to
extract some or all of the files in the archive. Select
all of the files that you want to decompress. If you want to
decompress all of them, simply click on All when presented with
the window.
|
- You can also double-click files in
the WinZip window to open them; however, unless you use the Save
As command in the opened files, they will remain in the WinZip
archive when you close them - they won't be extracted.
|

|
How to Download a
Picture From the Internet
| STEPS |

| 1. |
Go to a Web
site, and let the entire page load. |
|
| 2. |
Scroll to
the picture you want.
Point the mouse arrow on the
picture. |
|
| 3. |
For PC
users, right-click on the picture so that a menu appears.
For Mac users, press and hold down
the mouse button to see the menu.
Choose "Save Picture As" if
you're using Internet Explorer.
Choose "Save Image As" if
you're using Netscape Navigator. |
|
| 4. |
Select the
name that's in the "File name" box, and type in the name
you would like to give the picture. |
|
| 5. |
Click the
down arrow to the right of the "Save as type" box.
Pick a format to save the picture as. |
|
| 6. |
Click once
on the folder you want to save it in. |
|
| 7. |
Click the
button to the right of the "File name" box.
Depending on your browser, it's
either called Save or Open. |

|
|
|
Tips: |
|
|
|
- This will work on most sites, but
sometimes the pictures are protected and they can't be saved.
|
- If you want to send the picture
via e-mail, save it in JPEG format, because this format
downloads faster and takes up less space on your hard drive.
|
- Most sites will tell you not to
save their pictures for commercial use.
- If you would rather save the
pictures on a floppy disk instead of on your hard drive, make
sure the "Save in" box says "3 1/2 Floppy (A:)."
|
- If you use a picture from another
site on your Web site, the owners of the site usually like
credit or a link to their page for it. Be sure to ask for
permission before you use another person's image on the Web,
because you could be violating the creator's copyright.
